Empowering Coastal Communities: WFF Indonesia Chapter Collaboration with KNTI and KPPMPI
The World Food Forum (WFF) Indonesia Chapter recognizes the vital role that coastal communities play in achieving sustainable agrifood systems and enhancing livelihoods. In our ongoing commitment to this cause, we recently convened a significant bilateral meeting with KNTI (Kesatuan Nelayan Tradisional Indonesia) and KPPMPI (Kesatuan Pelajar Pemuda dan Mahasiswa Pesisir Indonesia) to discuss strategies for empowering these communities in Indonesia. Representing the WFF Indonesia Chapter, Dibyana Galih Prakasita as Head of Action and Ayu Anggraini as Treasurer, engaged in meaningful discussions with KNTI and KPPMPI’s representatives, Jan Tuhaeteru, Tommy Yandra and Hendra Wiguna.
Background of the Organizations
KNTI, established in 2009, has been a steadfast advocate for traditional fishermen, working diligently to elevate their voices and improve their socio-economic conditions. The organization focuses on addressing the challenges faced by adult fishermen, ensuring their needs are represented in policy discussions and development initiatives. KPPMPI, formed just two years ago, was initiated by KNTI to support young fishermen and coastal students. This organization aims to nurture the next generation of leaders in the maritime sector, fostering skills and knowledge that are essential for sustainable practices in coastal areas. Together, they are committed to enhancing the livelihoods of coastal communities.
Key Meeting Highlights
The discussions during our meeting were centered around the upcoming Rembuk Pangan Pesisir, scheduled from 1 – 7 December across 71 cities in Indonesia. This event will serve as a platform for youth engagement, where participants will discuss local food systems and sustainability. The insights and outcomes from these regional discussions are expected to influence national policies, with findings to be presented on 12 December. We are pleased to collaborate by sending youth delegates to participate in this important event, ensuring their voices are heard in the national discourse on food systems and climate resilience.
Opportunities for Collaboration
KNTI and KPPMPI have expressed a strong interest in partnering with the WFF Indonesia Chapter on several impactful initiatives. One key area of collaboration involves contributions to the WFF Opinion Corner. Both organizations are eager to share their insights and experiences, offering valuable perspectives on the challenges faced by coastal communities. By bringing these voices to the forefront, we can enrich the dialogue surrounding sustainable practices and policy development.
Another important initiative is the development of aquaculture curricula in collaboration with the WFF Academy. KPPMPI aims to create educational materials that equip students and young advocates with the necessary knowledge for effective advocacy in the field. This effort is essential for fostering a new generation of leaders who can champion sustainable practices within their communities.
Additionally, there is a recognized need for comprehensive training programs tailored for fishermen and seaweed farmers. These programs aim to empower local practitioners, cultivating local heroes who can advocate for sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and the economy. By investing in the skills and knowledge of these individuals, we can promote resilience and sustainability in coastal areas, ensuring that communities thrive in harmony with their natural resources.
Through these collaborative efforts, the WFF Indonesia Chapter, KNTI and KPPMPI are committed to enhancing the resilience and sustainability of Indonesia’s coastal areas. By empowering local communities, we can foster initiatives that promote environmental stewardship and economic growth. Together, we strive for a sustainable future where access to good food is guaranteed for all, today and tomorrow.
