WFF Sierra Leone Youth Chapter: Cultivating change for youth leadership in food security and climate action

On 15 February, the WFF Sierra Leone Youth Chapter hosted a transformative workshop at the University of Makeni, bringing together young leaders, students and key stakeholders to explore opportunities for youth engagement in food security and climate action. The event aimed to strengthen and expand the Chapter’s membership by reaching universities across the country, fostering a nationwide movement of empowered youth.
As part of this expansion, two new university-based WFF campus clubs were officially launched. These clubs will serve as focal points for youth-led initiatives, providing young leaders with the resources and platform to drive meaningful change in their communities.
The workshop welcomed 20 new members into the Chapter, expanding the network of young changemakers committed to sustainable agrifood systems and climate resilience. Representatives from each university were appointed, empowering them to lead initiatives and advocate for food security and climate action within their institutions. The Chapter is also working towards a gender-balanced leadership structure, ensuring inclusive representation and equal opportunities for all members to contribute effectively.
The workshop set the stage for an ambitious 2025, unveiling key initiatives to drive youth-led action in food security and climate resilience. The Schools and Universities Tour on Plastic Waste Management and School Gardens will empower students to champion sustainability while transforming campuses into hubs for environmental conservation. Meanwhile, the University Students Farms Project will provide hands-on agricultural experience, equipping young leaders with practical skills to promote sustainable agrifood systems. The workshop also included an interactive session, where participants brainstormed bold solutions and formed collaborative teams to tackle pressing challenges. The event wrapped up with a strong commitment to action as new members prepared to dive into ongoing projects, campus clubs geared up for growth and plans for the upcoming nationwide tour took shape.
The Chapter’s workshop marks a significant step in mobilizing youth leadership for a more sustainable and food-secure future. With new members, empowered young leaders and clear action plans, the Chapter is set to make a lasting impact in 2025 and beyond.
Together, we cultivate change!
