Where do youth stand in ensuring that agricultural policy and initiatives address the realities of agrifood systems?

The World Food Forum (WFF) Republic of Korea Youth Chapter is exploring this question through a series of interviews with Members of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea. The Youth-to-Legislator Policy Dialogue examines how national policies align with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)'s Four Betters and how they shape the country's agrifood systems. The initiative provides a platform for youth to share their perspectives on rural agriculture and food security with national policymakers.

The first interview took place on 14 July 2026, when the Chapter met with Representative Lim Mi-ae, a Member of the 22nd National Assembly, a farmer and specialist in sustainable rural development and climate resilience. She initiated the Act on the Promotion and Support of Agrivoltaics, which was passed on 7 May 2026 and aims to support a more just transition to renewable energy in rural areas.

The conversation explored the current state of agriculture in the country, innovation within agrifood systems, the expansion of solar energy in rural areas and the role of youth in agriculture. Key challenges include an ageing farming population, high farmland costs and low agricultural productivity. The discussion highlighted the potential of renewable energy and agricultural technologies to increase farm income and support productivity, while emphasizing the need for a more focused approach to the use of technology in agriculture.

This is an area where youth can play an important role. According to Representative Lim Mi-ae, "Real agricultural innovation is possible through the expansion of smart agriculture and the entry of young farmers".

The dialogue highlighted both the challenges facing young people entering agriculture and their potential to contribute to agrifood systems transformation. It also provided a platform to discuss policies and programmes that respond to the needs of the agricultural sector and create greater opportunities for youth participation.

This interview marks the beginning of the Chapter's ongoing efforts to strengthen youth participation in national policy processes and contribute to more resilient agrifood systems. Over the coming months, the Chapter will continue engaging with Members of the National Assembly and advocating for meaningful youth participation in national policy discussions.
