About the WFF Republic of Korea Youth Chapter
The World Food Forum (WFF) Republic of Korea (ROK) Youth Chapter was officially established in June 2023, with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Partnership and Liaison Office (PLO) in the ROK. The Chapter serves as a platform for engaging young Koreans in advancing more sustainable agrifood systems.
By 2024, the Chapter had doubled in size to over 20 members as part of its efforts to raise awareness around sustainable agrifood practices. In 2025, it continues to grow, reflecting the rising enthusiasm among Korean youth to lead change in agrifood systems.
Goals and Objectives
- Empower Korean youth to actively engage in agrifood systems transformation through diverse opportunities such as events, workshops and study trips.
- Create an inclusive platform for young people to share their perspectives on agriculture, forestry, fisheries, climate change and other key agrifood systems issues.
- Organize a decentralized forum event during the annual WFF flagship event, showcasing a strong commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and driving youth-led transformation in agrifood systems.
Current initiatives
- "Plan B-etter for a Sustainable Tomorrow" - 2024 WFF Country event - Republic of Korea
On 17 October 2024, the Chapter and the FAO Partnership and Liaison Office in ROK co-hosted a local event titled, “Plan B-etter for a Sustainable Tomorrow”, in Seoul. This youth-led event aimed to tackle local agrifood systems challenges, particularly food waste and unbalanced diets, by promoting the concept of ‘good food’ as both socially and environmentally sustainable. The event aimed to explore alternative approaches, or Plan B, to achieve a better food future. With over 20 diverse young members, the Chapter showcased its expanded efforts through three dedicated teams: communication, workshop and field trips.
The event spotlighted youth-led startups like Nareum, Gold Babyrice and ALTist, showcasing creative local solutions to global sustainability challenges. From reducing food waste to promoting eco-friendly consumption and low-carbon diets, these initiatives exemplify how young people are shaping more sustainable and inclusive agrifood systems. The event concluded with a wrap-up session to gather feedback and explore alternative solutions. Overall, the event raised awareness on sustainable food practices, emphasized youth leadership and contributed to the 2024 WFF theme: “Good Food for All, For Today and Tomorrow”. - The Chapter actively organizes workshops and field trips to educate, inspire and mobilize youth for the sustainable transformation of agrifood systems. Recent examples include the Chapter’s visit to two urban agriculture sites in Seoul, gaining firsthand insights into sustainable farming in space- and resource-constrained urban environments. A field trip to the Orca Project in Wonju provided a hands-on introduction to permaculture through harvesting and gardening activities. Additionally, two interactive workshops were held to strengthen member engagement, foster cohesion and encourage the exchange of ideas related to the agrifood sector.
