WFF Spain Youth Chapter contributes to improving food quality and promoting healthier lifestyles in universities
From 7 to 9 March 2026, the World Food Forum (WFF) Spain Youth Chapter took part in the Escuela de Activismo Basoa (Activism School) organized by Justicia Alimentaria (Food Justice) in Bilbao, Spain. The event brought together students from universities across Spain to explore agrifood systems within university settings. Participating institutions included Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universitat de València, Universitat Politècnica de València, Universidad Católica de València, Universidad de les Illes Balears, Universidad de Zaragoza and the University of the Basque Country. Discussions focused on food sovereignty and examined the availability and quality of food offered in universities.
The discussions built on a study conducted by students ahead of the event, assessing food environments across campuses. The findings highlighted key issues, including limited availability of healthy options in vending machines and cafeterias, as well as pricing patterns that made processed food, ready-made meals and soft drinks more affordable than fruits and vegetables.
Throughout the sessions, participants shared findings and experiences from their respective universities. These exchanges helped identify practical actions to improve food environments and promote healthier eating habits among students, while also creating a broader understanding of shared challenges across universities and educational institutions.
The event also supported the development of student networks across universities. Participants began outlining joint actions at the national level and created a shared space for coordination and communication, laying out the foundation for future collaborations. By taking part in these discussions, the Chapter contributed to strengthening dialogue and collaboration among students, reinforcing its role in promoting more inclusive and sustainable agrifood systems.
